Shawnee Thornton Hardy
Shawnee has been a lifelong athlete with a dedication to fitness and health. She was a long distance runner for most of her life which kept her physically fit and gave her an outlet for stress. Following the birth of her daughter, she began experiencing physical symptoms such as extreme lethargy, popping bones, severe headaches, heart palpitations and many other symptoms. After months of visiting a variety of specialists, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease. She had also been suffering with ongoing back pain and back spasms from a work injury. Without the ability to run, she began to feel increased anxiety and depression. Along with her physical difficulties, she was going through many challenging transitions and was overwhelmed with worry, fear, anxiety and instability. During a physical therapy appointment her doctor suggested yoga. Shawnee tried a class and when she left she realized that for one hour her mind was focused and in the present moment. She became dedicated to the practice of yoga. Through her continued practice she became increasingly energetic, many of her symptoms from her autoimmune disease diminished and her back became strong and healthy. Far beyond the physical benefits she gained from her yoga practice, she began to notice a shift in her thought patterns. Through breath, meditation and a specialized asana practice, she was able to let go of the need for control and experience life from an entirely new perspective. Being a natural teacher, having taught special education for years, she decided to become certified as a yoga instructor, thus began her lifelong journey of learning and sharing her passions with others.
Shawnee is a C-IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist through The International Association of Yoga Therapists, a 500 E-RYT through Yoga Alliance and an RCYT (registered children's yoga teacher). She was fortunate enough to have Rachel Krentzman, Founder of Embody Physical Therapy, as her mentor where she gained tremendous knowledge and appreciation for anatomy, focus on proper alignment and safety, and the healing benefits of yoga therapy. She completed a 100-hour Happy Back certification and a total of 300 hours mentorship training with Rachel Krentzman with an emphasis on spinal health and using yoga as a tool to relieve back , neck and shoulder pain. She has completed 120 hours of Purna Yoga Therapy trainings with Master Teacher Aaidil Pakhivala. She is currently certified in the application of Purna Yoga Therapeutics for Asthma and Bronchitis, Diabetes, Digestive Issues (Acid Reflux/GERD, IBS and Crohn's Disease), High Blood Pressure and Low Blood Pressure, Sleep Problems, Stroke & Epilepsy, Thyroid issues, Autoimmune Conditions, Neck, Knee, Low Back and Sacrolilliac Pain and Problems, Shouders, Upper Back and Wrist issues, Headaches, Alzheimer's, Eye Problems and Adrenals and Fatigue. She studied Relax & Renew Restorative Yoga and Experiential Anatomy with Judith Hanson Lasater among studies with many other wonderful teachers. Shawnee is currently completing her 3 year studies in Somatic Experiencing™ developed by Peter Levine and incorporates what she has learned in her group therapeutic classes as well as private sessions with her students working through trauma. She believes deeply that the nervous system and physical body store memories from trauma and through a somatic, individualized and collaborative approach we can release trauma and experience a more empowered and embodied way of being.
Shawnee teaches small group therapeutic classes and private yoga sessions tailored to meet the needs of her clients (both emotional and physical). Her classes and private sessions are iyengar based, using yoga props as tools to support the unique body types and physical differences of each individual. Shawnee also incorporates the Yoga Wall in her therapeutic classes and private sessions. Shawnee teaches a variety of styles of yoga including Happy Back Yoga, Gentle Hatha , Restorative and Therapeutic. Her truest passion is for yoga therapeutics. Shawnee believes that our bodies have a natural ability to heal if we commit ourselves to healing through proper nutiriton and a consistent practice of pranayama, meditation and asana. Shawnee embodies this commitment to healing in her own life and has healed herself of symptoms of hashimoto's thyroiditis, fibromyalgia, digestive problems and other autoimmune symptoms. Her deepest desire is to facilitate more healing in the world. Along with yoga, Shawnee is also passionate about writing. She has had several articles published on online journals including Elephant Journal, MindBodyGreen and Rebelle Society. She is passionate about many areas of life such as art, motherhood, style, creative writing, photography, nutrition, cooking, health and nature. She shares her journey through life on her blog fifteen shades of green.
She is also overjoyed to be infusing her two passions, teaching children and adults with autism and special needs and teaching yoga (see her website here) . Shawnee's book Asanas for Autism and Special Needs is available in the US and throughout the world. She is currently in the process of writing her second published book on the topic of Yoga Therapy for Youth. Shawnee will be forever grateful for finding yoga and aims to help others realize the immense benefits of joy, love, peace, freedom, mindfulness, empowerment and healing that yoga can offer.
